Flying Five Thousand Kilometers Without Stopping!!

It is called the tortoise-galego, has a brown plumage, a long beak, and is a record holder. It takes about five days to travel more than five thousand kilometers between Iceland and the Bijagós archipelago in Guinea-Bissau, without stopping to feed or hydrate. And without gliding.

An article published this Wednesday in the journal Scientific Reports reveals some details of the incredible proof of resistance of this bird limicola.

The researchers were able to recover four of the devices that recorded the voyage of the Galician tortoises (Numenius phaeopus). Two of the birds made an 11 and 15-day stopover on the return flight from Africa (where they spend the winter) and the other two (one male and one female) presented an impressive record of a non-stop flight.
